As the world evolves, so also are the strategies to teach children for good and clear understanding. Now that technology is disrupting human activities, the educational field is also not spared, as several devices including mobile electronic tablet has become one of most sought after learning device for children.
Tablets are not just digital babysitters for young kids or fancy versions of e-readers, they offer real value as educational tools.
A mum, out of curiosity bought a kids’ tablet from which her child benefitted immensely. Now, the child’s interest in the learning device has spurred Nkiru, the mum into being a distributor of the device.
Today, Nkiruka Esther Obisike is the CEO of Kids’ Tablet and More, a retail business that delivers children educational items for information to help build smart and unique kids.
The motivation for Nkiru, a graduate of Chemical Engineering from Institute of Management and Technology (IMT ) Enugu State, and a native of Ihuokpala in Nkanu East Local government area of Enugu state, came from the son’s interest in using the tablet that has been impactful on the little boy. Then she saw an opportunity and then, ventured into its supply.
“I started in November 2019 after acquiring kids’ tablet for my child. I noticed his interest in it and i told myself that this could be a rewarding business because children love it as it helps them to learn as they play with it’.
“Besides, it engages the kids and prevent them from leaving the house”.
Nkiru was convinced of her newfound love and she decided to quit her work at Boulos Enterprises Limited where she worked as a Senior Laboratory Analyst. The idea of quitting the work got a boost from her being in a state then. The period does not require a strenuous job and she found the business an easy fix.
“I started with my little savings of N200,000 which I used to get some of the tablets at the market”.
With the savings, she made her research and decided for five brands. Amazon, Nabby, Wintouch, Gtab, Samsung, are attractive to her owing to their uniqueness, prices, and capabilities.
“They have different educational applications installed according to the kids’ ages”.
Nkiru’s target market are parents with children in nursery level and up to basic education. With referrals, Nkiru’s clientele grows, and orders from Ilorin, Ebonyi, Port- Harcourt and other states start to trickle in.
The social media viz Instagram and Facebook have also been helpful, assisting her to grow her earnings in hundreds of thousands.
She is now encouraged and motivated to go beyond retailing. With the increasing acceptability of e-commerce in Nigeria, Nkiru is considering going a step further especially as one can sit in the comfort of one’s home and be making good money.
“My short-term plan is to be a distributor, I will get direct contact of the company and directly buy from them, I have also started meeting up schools to supply them”.
The ugly experience of receiving a sub-standard product has been an issue that buyers contend with and the invasion of scammers has also made it scarier. Distributors like Nkiru are also not spared of how this has been a drain on their earnings and profits.
“The challenge is that people are still scared of ordering things online because of scammers. For example, customers outside Lagos always request For-Pay-On-Delivery which is impossible and this makes us to lose money to vendors with stores in those states”.
To the young ones who are still looking for white-collar or office jobs, Nkiru said “There is no harm in trying to start something no matter how small the money you have. With little amount, you can start up something because time will come soon when people won’t be going out to buy items, create time to build something”
