Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have lost on penalties to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

The visitors took a 19th-minute lead as Timo Werner scored his first goal for the club, firing home into the bottom corner after good work from Cesar Azpilicueta.

Spurs improved and had chances through Gedson Fernandes and Erik Lamela, but Werner’s goal was enough for Chelsea to go in at half-time 1-0 – while Lampard and Mourinho also exchanged words on the touchline as tempers threatened to boil over.

Chelsea looked to close the game out, but Sergio Reguilon made amends for his mistake for Chelsea’s goal to assist Erik Lamela – and that goal took it to a penalty shootout, with Mason Mount missing to ensure Spurs won 5-4.
