The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has asked all schools in the territory to reopen on Monday, 12th October to conclude the second term and the 2019/2020 session within two weeks of resumption.

The directive is the outcome of a series of meetings by officials of the FCT Education Secretariat and FCTA with stakeholders in the education sector in the territory between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The schools have also been directed to use the results of only two terms (first and second terms) for the promotion of students to the next class.

It shows that the FCTA has ruled out a third term from the session that COVID-19 has totally disrupted.

Sources confirmed to InsideBusiness on Wednesday that the schools would use the first two weeks as a refresher course and conclusion of the second term examinations.

The officials disclosed that a new academic session for 2020/2021 (first term) would begin from the third week of school resumption.

“The Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, has approved the reopening of schools in the territory on October 12,” according to an official who also said the minister will give an official announcement on the reopening of schools in the FCT at a news conference on Thursday.

InsideBusiness recalls that the Federal Government had on October 2 directed all Unity Schools in the country to resume academic activities from October 12.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the directive during a news conference in Abuja, stating that “We have consulted widely with all stakeholders in the education sector. Our eyes and ears are opened to the international media.

“I am glad to report that there has not been any single case of COVID-19 in all Unity Schools. No single fatality among the students.

“We have come to the conclusion that we have to review our decisions. After consultation with Presidential Task Force, we have resolved that our Unity Schools be opened on October 12, 2020.”

The unity schools, according to the minister, are at liberty to fix resumption dates and ensure adequate safety measures.

He warned that schools who fail to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols, risk closure if there is an outbreak from such institutions.

Schools all over the federation were shut down following the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari that ordered a lockdown and restricted all indoors on March 30 in measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently ravaging the world and led to the death of several.

As of 6th October, Nigeria has recorded 59,583 cases of the dreaded virus of which 51,308 have been discharged and 1.113 dead.
