Ondo Poll: Electorate Decides Akeredolu, Jegede, Ajayi’s Fate Today
Electorate in Ondo State will today, October 10, 2020 elect a governor that will administer the state for the next four years.
Though there are candidates of 17 political parties on the ballot paper, three candidates are the front liners in the state with a land area of about 15,500kms (6,000sq.ml) and according to the 2006 census, a population of 3,441,924 people.
The electorate will on Saturday (today) decides the fate of the three front liners – incumbent governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress; Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Agboola Ajayi, the candidate of Zenith Labour Party and current deputy governor of the state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could not conduct fresh voter’s registration and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) because of coronavirus pandemic.
However, with the past INEC record, there are 1,822, 346 registered voters while 1,478,460 PVCs were collected representing 81 per cent of the total voter population.
Election will take place in 3,009 polling units of 203 wards in the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.
INEC has expressed readiness to conduct the free, fair, credible and transparent election, while about 33,000 police personnel and 1,500 Federal Road Safety Corps personnel have been deployed to ensure security and orderliness during the exercise.
Also, other security agencies have deployed about 3,500 of their personnel to complement the Nigerian Police Force. In addition, the Nigerian Navy and the Marine Police have deployed gunboats to escort INEC personnel and materials in the high sea, especially in the riverine areas where there are about 170 polling units.
