House of Representatives’ resolution has asked the Abuja Electricity Distribution company (AEDC) to connect extend power from the Geregu Gas Power Plant in Ajaokuta to Ankpa, Omala and Olamaboro Local government, a constituency in Kogi East Senatorial District.
The resolution followed a motion on notice by Hon. Hassan Omale (APC, Kogi) and also mandated the House Committee on on Power to liaise with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ensure that AEDC linkS the district to the power plant.
Hon. Omale had noted that the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) declined to connect the affected areas due to the inadequacy of the single line feeder transmission sub-station.
“The federal government has commisioned electricity projects in the State aimed at improving power supply to various towns. However, Ankpa, Omala and Olamaboro Local Government Areas have been left out and still in decades of darkness”.
“The lack of electricity supply to the areas is making life unbearable for the peole and the small scale enterprises and industries that were once thriving have closed down due to non-availability of electric power.
“The continuing lack of power supply to the areas is causing security challenges as there is an upsurge in criminal activities like armed robbery, kidnapping and other related crimes due to the perpetual darkness at nights and able-bodied youths idling away”, he stressed.
He pointed out that the provision of electricity to the areas will promote economic growth, facilitate employment for the teeming youths, ensure security of lives and property and improve the general wellbeing of the people of the areas.
The motion was passed without debate due to its infrastructural nature in line with the provision of order 8, rule 41 sub-rule 5 of the House standing orders.
