FG Closes Another Section of Third Mainland Bridge From Jan 13
The traffic gridlock is expected to be more intense as the federal government has announced the closure of another section of the Third Mainland Bridge for 14 days to enable the removal, replacement and cast in place the joints 23 of the bridge.
A letter from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing referenced FCW/LS/CN6238/VOL.1/321 dated 7 January and signed by Engr Olukayode Popoola, the Federal controller of work, said the closure would commence from Wednesday 13th January 2021 and run through 27th January 2021.
The letter which was sent to the Commissioner of Transport, Lagos state added that the closure would affect the route towards Oworonshoki and be closed to traffic from the Lagos Island-bound carriageway including the Adekunle slip of the bridge.
“The contractor planned to shift the current diversion point 2km towards Oworonshoki and close to traffic the Lagos Island-bound carriageway including the Adekunle bound slip road beside the current diversion for two weeks starting from Wednesday 13th January 2021 to 27th January 2021 to enable her to remove, replace and cast in place joint 23 after the current diversion point alongside the other two joints 16 and 17 sines Is working on presently on the Lagos Island-bound carriageway. ”
It added that after the casting of the joint and asphalting, the whole Lagos Island-bound carriageway would be opened to traffic.
Recall that on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, the Federal Government also announced a 72 hour total shut down of the bridge to cast concrete on the expansion joints.
The repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge started in July 2020 and was expected to end in January 2021 but was extended to February 2021 owing to Covid-19 pandemic which affected the flow of work.
