I won’t Buy APC Nomination Form Through Proxies, Says Emefiele
Four days to the closure of the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms for those interested in elective positions in the forthcoming 2023 elections, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele says he will procure the form with his hard-earned savings without proxies when he finally decides to run for the nation’s plum position, the presidency.
Emefiele’s reaction came amid calls for his resignation from the CBN Governor after indications emerged that it was beyond speculation of his interest in the presidency.
Calls for Emefiele’s resignation became louder on Friday when it was claimed that three interest groups- “Rice farmers”, “Emefiele Support Group” and “Friends of Godwin Emefiele” have procured the N100 million presidential Nomination and Expression of interest forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the apex bank governor.
Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu called on Emefiele to resign his position if he wants to contest the presidency, he cannot participate actively in partisan politics and also hold the position of CBN governor.
“Consequently, we admonish Mr Emefiele to leave the office, immediately, for him to pursue his interest. He cannot combine partisan politics with the very delicate assignment of his office. Should he refuse to quit, it becomes incumbent on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to remove him forthwith,” Akeredolu said.
“I thank them most profusely. However, Should I answer their calls and decide to seek presidential nomination, I will use my hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy my Nomination Forms without proxies in an open and transparent manner in full compliance with the laws and constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria”, Emefiele responded on Saturday via his Twitter handle, while lauding those urging him to run.
“I am humbled by the growing interest of those asking that I run for the Office of President in the 2023 general elections: I have not come to that decision. I note and salute the sacrifices of those farmers and patriots going as far as raising personal funds and offering me Presidential Nomination Forms,” he wrote.
He promised to continue to serve and sacrifice for the good people of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that running for the position of a president is a serious decision that requires God’s Divine intervention, ‘In the next few days, The Almighty will so direct’.
The ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) opened the door for procurement of forms for elective positions on April 21, and again, on Thursday, its National Working Committee shifted the closing of expression of interest from Friday, May 6 to Tuesday, May 10.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement to announce the party’s revised timetable, issued by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, said the last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents is now set for Wednesday, May 11, 2022.
The new timetable also said the congresses to elect local government area, state and national delegates will hold from Thursday, May 12, to Saturday, May 14, 2022.
