Customs Strike Force Impounds Rice, Others Worth N6.64bn

The Strike Force Team A of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted donkey skins, illicit drugs, foreign parboiled rice and other contraband goods with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N6.64billion.in its anti-smuggling activities and sustained efforts to protect the Nigerian economy

It also collected a total of N1.36billion for the months of March and April 2022.

Its Coordinator, Mohammed Sani Yusuf, who disclosed this in Lagos said that the resolve to step up in the fight against smuggling and enemies of the economy was being renewed daily as smugglers were unrelenting.

Yusuf gave a breakdown of the seizures made within the period of eight weeks including: “1,030 slabs of donkey skin, 387kg of cannabis Sativa, 285 bales of used clothes, 4000 bags of foreign parboiled rice (an equivalent of about 7 truckloads), 1,613 cartons of Codeine cough syrup (100ml per bottle).

Also on the list are 132 cartons of 200mg Sildenafil Citrate, 40 cartons of Tramadol, 5 cartons of Chilly Cutter, 1,080 pairs of ladies’ shoes, and 110 cartons of ladies bags, and 115 cartons of ladies gel among other items.

The prohibited drugs according to him, were falsely declared as machine parts by the importers before the strike force operatives acting on intelligence uncovered them

He explained that the quest to smuggle foreign parboiled rice into the country has been on the increase, despite sustained efforts by the federal government to encourage local production.
