Civilian Administrations that Nigeria had experienced since independence were essentially plutocratic in nature. From the first republic up till now, we have practised PLUTOCRACY – a system of government by a few wealthy individuals. Though this oligarchical pattern of Democracy is not limited to Nigeria nevertheless, it has caused the nation more injury than others in addition to growing out of proportion and control. Plutocracy is the government of the rich, by the super-rich for the moneybags.
The health of Nigeria has been gravely impaired by Plutocratic dictatorship which is a direct fallout of the Political Party System.
Whenever the party system is in operation, the super-rich takes the day except there is an act of God.
As we have seen, again and again, Political Party System only promotes corruption, mindless looting of the public treasury, inequality, discrimination, high cost of governance, impunity and poor human development.
Political Party System never unifies Nigeria. It never integrates her ethnic components but instead magnifies her heterogeneity, in-cohesion & individualism. These, in turn, kill patriotism, morality and nationhood.
Most painful and grievously worrisome is the fact that the party system produces Politicians and NOT Leaders. The former (Politicians) are always driven by concerns for the next election whereas the latter (Leaders) are concerned about the next generations.
Reputable leaders, good leaders engage in deep thoughts, they deny themselves comfort, and burn the midnight oil to apprehend laudable visions and clear-cut strategies for articulating the same for the objectives of galvanizing the nation and the people to the forefront of human development. They sacrifice a great deal to come up with superlative ideas on how best to manage the nation’s resources for optimum results. It is not so with Politicians whose trust is in the money in their purse & how to multiply it after winning an election by hook or crooks. They are obsessed with the longing for power.
Party System pollutes its subscribers, elevating falsehood, deceit and subterfuge to the centre-point of daily interaction. How many Politicians in Nigeria are sincere?
Party leaders and members do not trust themselves because they cannot earn it. Selfishness and pecuniary interests can switch any one among them to any strange side of the game at any moment. How do you entrust the destiny of a nation with these kinds of people and the awkward system they easily manipulate and still expect all things to go well?
But principally because of its unambiguous focus, discipline, comportment to standards and creative drive to meet human needs, Professions in every country, do identify good potential, nurture and train such individuals for outstanding leadership in various human endeavours. This is why we clamour importunately that Professions should replace Political Parties in the practice of Democracy.
Indeed, for Democracy to genuinely transit out of Plutocracy and serve the people, Professions must become the Platforms for recruiting representatives into government. We call this pattern of true people-oriented representation LIBERTOCRACY.
Professions are levellers for both the rich and poor; the high and low. You represent in government what you do (speciality) which is also an area of need of the people.
It cuts down the massively high cost of electoral Candidature associated with the Political Party System.
It kills Corruption from the roots as procurement by government agencies, departments & Ministries would be based on actual market prices as dealers in all goods would be represented in the Legislature.
The benefits of LIBERTOCRACY for Nigeria and the world are many and inexhaustible.
For example, it has the uniqueness to integrate all ethnic components of the nation. A Nigerian can contest election wherever he or she is based to represent their professions in government in the region. The state of origin is replaced with the place of settlement.
