Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, and his daughter, Temi Kosoko, were at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) on Thursday to educate students on how to use mobile phones to make content for social change.

They both engaged the students on the importance of digital skills to reduce the unemployment rate and drive progress in the country.

The event was part of a two-day workshop hosted by ‘Shoot Your Shot Africa’ themed ‘Content Creation as a tool for social change’ and packaged by Adebisi Peters, a cinematographer, and the Department of Mass Communication Students of the college.

Joining virtually via video call, Jide Kosoko told the over 200 students to be passionate about whatever they do, and be digitally equipped with knowledge of creation to reduce unemployment.

His daughter, Temi, was live at the event where she admonished the students to consistent in content creation to overcome challenges.

She said she outgrew her father’s shadow and made a name for herself with consistent efforts.

The younger Kosoko said, “my father is a celebrity, but I have never tapped into his popularity; I built myself by myself.”

She advised young people to be self-assured and knowledgeable about what their target audiences want; only then will they be able to achieve great communication and content creation.

“If you know what you’re doing and how to package it properly, you’ll go a long way.” She added.

Also present as a facilitator at the event, popular skit maker, Kemi Ikusedun, also known as Kemp Mama, urged young people to be versatile in their content rather than focusing on a single idea if they want to move the content creation market forward in the twenty-first century.

The content maker who features prominently alongside Debo Adebayo (Mr Macaroni), said it was important for youths to diversify and explore dynamism in their creative pursuits.

“Mr Macaroni has created a lot of series and it is not just Daddy and Mummy wa, he has created professor series, he is not just doing one thing, he is also innovating himself with what is going on,” Kemp Mama said.

“If you want to be a content creator, you can’t just keep doing what’s working for you; you have to branch out and try new things. You can start from scratch and rise to prominence in society simply by using your phone to post on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Tiktok.

“I started using my phone to post my content on YouTube, which increased my subscribers. I went long distances by taking buses from one location to another just to distribute flyers about YouTube page details every day,” she added.

Samuelson Oyejide, a popular filmmaker who gained fame for using his phone for high-quality shoots, was also present at the event.

Adebisi Peters, the CEO, of The Creative, who pioneered Shoot Your Shot African, stated, “It is time we revolutionized the use of new broadcast systems, online communication, and new media, which is why we organized this workshop in collaboration with the department of mass communications to educate the students to be creative.

“Because technology has advanced, so should the broadcast and online digitalisation, so should the skills we are passing on to Youths, so should we update it in the technological serve in broadcast and other parts of communication.
