Investors Gain N1.09bn As Stock Market Close Flat

Trading at the floor of the Nigerian Exchange Limited closed flat on Tuesday as the opening and closing difference of the All-Share Index and market capitalisation levelled to zero per cent.

It, however, left investors with a N1.09 billion gain as the market cap rose slightly to N26.77 trillion.

While stocks battled to find direction during the day’s trading session, consequently, the year-to-date gain of the domestic bourse remained unchanged at 16.18 per cent despite the market printing 16 losers against 13 gainers.

Notable stocks that advanced at the close of the day’s trading include Multiverse Mining and Exploration which gained 9.69 per cent to close at N2.83 to lead the best five-performing stocks.

Fidelity Bank’s shares rose by 3.02 per cent to N3.41, Honeywell Flour Mill appreciated by 2.64 per cent to N2.33, and Lafarge Africa saw a 1.65 per cent increase to N24.60.

Sectoral performance showed only the industrial indices advanced by 0.14 per cent to close at 1,791.67 basis points.

While the oil and gas index remained unchanged, other three indices tracked closed in the red. The insurance index lost 1.12 per cent to close at 179.07 basis points, the banking index followed, dropping by 0.09 per cent to close at 384.80 basis points and the consumer goods index slided by 0.02 per cent to 607.70 basis points.

Positive performance reflected on the market activity as the volume and value of stocks traded increased by 85.05 per cent and 277.17 per cent to 160.24 million units and N1.49 billion, respectively.

On the contrary, Red Star Express led the losers’ table, dropping by 10 per cent to N2.43, Courteville Business Solutions declined by 2.08 per cent to 0.47k, Transnational Corporation loss 0.93 per cent to N1.07, Dangote Sugar Refinery dipped by 0.6 per cent to N16.50, and Zenith Bank shed 0.25 per cent N20.

Meanwhile, the most actively traded equities by volume were Zenith Bank (536.65 million shares), Courteville Business Solutions (11.33 million shares), and Transnational Corporation (16.99 million shares).

Also, at the close of the day’s trading, Zenith Bank MTN Nigeria and Guaranty Trust Holding Company topped the most traded stocks by value, advancing to N536.65 million, N178.05 million, and N140.13 million respectively.
