Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez dazzle as Barcelona hammer Roma to top Group E

Champions League Group E, Camp Nou, Barcelona 6 (Suarez 15, 44 Messi 18, 60 Pique 56, Adriano 77) Roma 1 (Dzeko 90+1)

Barcelona took up where they left off in El Clasico, qualifying top of Group E after a 6-1 hammering of AS Roma.

A brace from Luis Suarez and a sublime Lionel Messi chip gave Barca a 3-0 half time lead.

And further second half goals from Gerard Pique, Adriano and Messi again completed the rout before a late Edin Dzeko consolation.

The result means that Barcelona finish top of Group E with a game still to spare with Roma second from Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference as the race for the runners-up spot goes to the final game.

Barc. Louis Suarez

4’ – CHANCE MESSI! Cracking effort from Messi on the edge of the box and a super one-handed save from Szczesny.

9’ – CHANCE MESSI! Another huge hole through the middle as Busquets picks out Messi but the little Argentine hits his shot just wide. He scores those more often than not.

13’ – CHANCE ROMA! Nainggolan picks out Dzeko who really should score but his header is over the bar.

15’ – GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Roma. A wonderful team move from Barcelona.Neymar picks out Alves and he squares for Suarez to tap home into an unguarded net.

18’ – GOAL! Barcelona 2-0 Roma. An impudent chip from Lionel Messi as Szczesny comes off his line and a sublime Barca are further ahead.

Lionel Messi Scores V Roma

44’ – GOAL! Barcelona 3-0 Roma. The purest of volleys from Suarez into the far corner as Keita’s clearance comes straight back to him.

56’ – GOAL! Barcelona 4-0 Roma. Another super team goal. Suarez to Messi and he squares the ball for Pique to tap home into an empty net. Sublime.

60’ – GOAL! Barcelona 5-0 Roma. It’s Messi’s second as he follows up his initial saved effort from Szczesny.

77’ – GOAL! Barcelona 6-0 Roma. Szczesny saves Neymar’s spot kick but Adriano is there to follow it up.

82′ – MISSED ROMA PENALTY! Ter Stegen guesses right to his left and saves Dzeko’s penalty. One of those nights for Roma.

Marc-Andre saves a penalty

90+1’ – GOAL! Barcelona 6-1 Roma. With the last kick of the game, Edin Dzeko heads in a consolation.

That was the biggest victory for a Spanish side over an Italian side in European competition.

Suarez has scored six goals in six games and netted his 17th goal of the season for Luis Suarez.

Luis Suarez is the first South American player to score 13 goals in his first 20 UCL games.

Gerard Piqué has scored 10 goals in the UCL; only three defenders have more than him (R. Carlos 16, Helguera 15, Panucci 11).

Barca on a different planet. Difficult to see how anyone bar Bayern Munichcan live with this side in this mood. What a final that would be.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona): Almost as if he’s never been away. Scored a brace, made another and created several other chances. A magical display. Yet again!
