The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has urged the media to focus on the positive aspects of the federal government’s economic reforms.
Representing the Speaker, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Freedom and Good Governance Award ceremony on Saturday night, the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi, emphasized the importance of promoting the efforts of the Federal Government in achieving economic and developmental transformations despite challenges like the removal of fuel subsidies.
“While economic reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidy, may have been painful for Nigerians, they have also brought significant positives to our nation’s economy,” Rotimi stated as he urged the media to play a crucial role in highlighting these positive changes through their reports. “It is in our collective interest to accede to this request given the critical state of our economy,” he added.
Rotimi underscored the media’s role as a vehicle for socio-economic transformation, aligning with the objectives of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration. He urged journalists to reflect deeply on their relationship with the government, suggesting that fostering a constructive dialogue could generate fresh perspectives on the government-media relationship, ultimately contributing to good governance and national development.
He highlighted the media’s relevance in serving society and contributing to nation-building.
He also emphasized that understanding and promoting positive narratives about economic reforms are crucial steps in fast-tracking national development and ensuring good governance.
