Be Friendly To Your Students, Lagos Commissioner Charges Teachers
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Lagos State, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has called on teachers to foster positive relationships with their students.
Speaking on Tuesday, at the opening ceremony of a two-day capacity-building seminar for Year Tutors, Heads of Schools, and Stakeholders at Government Girls’ College, Agege, Alli-Balogun highlighted the importance of nurturing the totality of human life through education.
According to him, a friendly rapport with students fosters a sense of belonging among them. He therefore urged teachers to apply their knowledge of Guidance and Counseling to help students discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological potentials, ultimately attaining optimal social usefulness.
The seminar, organized by the Lagos State Examinations Board, aimed to sensitize participants on the conduct of various school-based and non-school-based examinations, including the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Placement Test by Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS), Public Service Examinations (PSE), and Screening Tests into Model Colleges and Upgraded Junior Secondary Schools.
Addressing questions about the extended school hours, the Commissioner explained that the additional hour is intended for reading and extracurricular activities, reinforcing the idea that schools play a critical role in shaping students’ futures. “School is not just for teaching and learning in the classroom but also for moulding the totality of the students’ lives for a better tomorrow,” he said.
The Commissioner also emphasised that teachers should take cognisance of the three domains of education including the Cognitive, the Affective and the Psychomotor, noting that these are a variety of methods in professional development aimed at promoting mindsets and behaviours that enhance the learning process and creating a culture of career and life readiness for every student.
He further charged the teachers to improve on their attitudinal and behavioural conduct, pointing out that teachers must be friendly with members of their immediate communities.
Noting that teaching is not about coming to the classroom alone, the Commissioner pointed out that the manners in which teachers approach members of their communities could add value to the teaching profession.
Alli-Balogun expressed appreciation to the present administration in the State led by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for its commitment to ensuring quality education in Lagos State.
About 500 participants drawn from the Six Education Districts of the State participated in the two-day seminar organised by the Lagos State Examinations Board.
