The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price increase until an ongoing investigation into the proposed tariff adjustment is concluded.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the FCCPC announced that MultiChoice had requested an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission over concerns about its repeated price hikes.

Initially, the regulator had summoned MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer for an investigative hearing on February 27. However, following the company’s request, the hearing has been rescheduled for March 6, 2025. The commission has mandated the presence of the CEO, relevant executives, and a comprehensive response to its inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the statement read.

The FCCPC explained that the decision aims to prevent potential consumer exploitation during the investigation period.

Earlier this week, MultiChoice notified its customers of an impending price adjustment, citing a review of its pricing model. While the company claimed the changes were necessary to sustain its delivery of world-class content, the announcement triggered concerns among subscribers.

Under the proposed revision, the price of the DStv Compact package was set to increase, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at ₦30,000 and ₦44,500, respectively.

In its official notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” MultiChoice stated, “Dear Customer, please note that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages. This is to enable us to continue offering our customers world-class homegrown and international content, delivered through the best technology.”

The FCCPC assured the public that it would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
