Finally, Arsenal Secure Dream Striker Gyokeres
After months of speculation, Arsenal have secured the signature of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP for €73.5 million, positioning the Swedish striker as their new No. 9, heading into the 2025-2026 season.
Gyokeres is the sixth signing of what has been a busy summer window at the Emirates. He follows Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera through the door at the Emirates.
The Gunners will pay an initial £54.8m up front, with a further £8.7m in additional clauses. These add-ons include Gyokeres’ goal and assist contributions, as well as whether Arsenal secure a place in the top four or win the Premier League title.
Despite comparisons to Darwin Nunez — whose move from Benfica to Liverpool fell short of expectations — Arsenal are confident they’ve landed a proven finisher rather than a gamble.
Nunez arrived at Liverpool with 34 goals from Benfica but has only managed 25 goals in 95 league appearances. In contrast, Gyokeres brought a consistent scoring record, having netted 97 goals in 102 matches across all competitions for Sporting, along with a strong international showing for Sweden.
Mikel Arteta has identified Gyokeres as the missing piece in Arsenal’s title push — a natural poacher to convert their many chances. Last season, Arsenal dominated possession and created opportunities in the six-yard box but lacked a true finisher. Kai Havertz, their top scorer, only managed nine goals before an injury sidelined him in February.
Unlike Nunez, Gyokeres is joining at his peak. At 27, he combines physicality, experience, and a proven ability to score, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City. His success in the Championship also shows familiarity with English football, even if not yet at Premier League level.
Arsenal considered younger options like Benjamin Sesko but opted for a ready-made solution. Arteta’s team is built to supply goals, and now, with Gyokeres leading the line, they finally have a striker capable of converting those chances into silverware.
After sealing his protracted move, the forward said: “I always want to score. To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.
“I started here [in England], it feels like a long time ago. I’ve improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove myself for real and perform together with the team.
“It’s a big honour to play for your country, and then to score goals for them is amazing. When I played at Sporting, I scored a few goals in the Champions League, so I feel that I can be on that level as well.
“Now to come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I’m excited to get going.”
On why he chose to join the Gunners, Gyokeres added: “I just felt that it was the right club for me. What I heard from Mikel [Arteta] and Andrea [Berta] when I was speaking with them, and just what I’ve seen in the past years, is how they’ve been playing football.
“When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I could feel it was a strong team and very difficult to play against. That made me choose Arsenal, and of course, all the history the club has, and the massive fan base. It’s been amazing to see all the support that they have already given me before I even arrived. That’s what it’s all about. It’s going to be very nice to see them in the stadiums as well.”
Upon completing the marquee signing, boss Mikel Arteta said: “We’re delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability has been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves. Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goal-scoring numbers at the club and international levels.
“He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat. We’re excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to working with him.
“We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal.”
Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta added: “We are so pleased with the excellent deal we have completed to bring Viktor Gyokeres to the club. Viktor is an exceptional talent and has consistently demonstrated that he has the qualities and winning mentality required of a top-level centre-forward. His physicality, intelligence and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our vision.
“We are confident Viktor will have a major impact on the pitch and become an important figure in our dressing room. Welcome, Viktor!”
The Gunners’ new superstar will wear the No. 14 shirt, most notably worn with distinction by club legend Thierry Henry.
Gyokeres had been on Arsenal’s radar for around a year. Club bosses also considered the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins.
But Arsenal chiefs decided to zone in on former Brighton and Coventry forward Gyokeres back in May.
Desperate to complete the move, the striker refused to report for pre-season training at Sporting.
Having finally secured his dream transfer, Gyokeres will head to Asia to join up with his new teammates.
The forward could feature in an Arsenal shirt for the first time on Thursday as Arteta‘s side take on fierce rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong.
Gyokeres spent five years in British football between 2018 and 2023 across spells at Brighton, Swansea and Coventry.
The impressive forward particularly excelled with the latter, scoring 43 times in 116 outings for the Sky Blues.
Goals flowed even more freely for Gyokeres after he completed a £21m move to Portuguese giants Sporting two years ago.
The 6ft 2in ace scored 97 goals and 102 appearances for the Lisbon side, including a stunning Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City last season.
Gyokeres now fills a gaping hole in Arsenal’s front line.
With Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both out injured during the second half of last season, boss Arteta frequently had to play midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift No. 9.
The Spaniard has now landed the combative, prolific front man that he so desired.
