Council of State Approves Professor Joash Amupitan as Next INEC Chairman
The National Council of State has approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from Kogi State as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Professor Amupitan’s name to the Council during its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to fill the vacancy created by the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his ten-year tenure in October 2025.
Describing the nominee as a non-partisan legal scholar and the first individual from Kogi State to be nominated for the position, President Tinubu said the appointment underscores his administration’s commitment to institutional integrity and regional inclusion.
Council members unanimously endorsed the nomination, with Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commending Amupitan’s impeccable character and dedication to public service.
In accordance with constitutional provisions, the President is expected to forward the nominee’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Aged 58, Professor Amupitan currently serves as Professor of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.
Elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014, Amupitan is widely recognised for his scholarship in Company Law, Corporate Governance, and the Law of Evidence. He has authored several influential legal texts and previously held key administrative positions at the University of Jos, including Dean of the Faculty of Law and Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors.
