The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government to introduce regulations to curb the spread of fake news on social media, describing it as a growing threat to national peace and stability.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Northern Traditional Rulers Council General Assembly in Birnin Kebbi, the Sultan expressed concern over the speed at which misinformation spreads online, noting that many Nigerians are easily misled by false narratives.
“It is now time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” he said.
The revered monarch also commended the Nigerian military for its ongoing efforts in tackling insecurity, particularly the fight against banditry in the northern region. He cautioned against harsh criticism of the armed forces, stressing that such comments could demoralise troops risking their lives to protect citizens.
“I strongly condemn some of the harsh words directed at our military because of certain setbacks. They are doing their best to restore security in many parts of the country,” the Sultan added.
In his welcome address, the Vice Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and Emir of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, said the theme of the assembly — “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria” — reflects a shared commitment to addressing insecurity through dialogue and partnership.
He underscored the importance of traditional institutions in promoting non-kinetic approaches to peacebuilding, describing them as a crucial link between government and local communities.
The meeting was attended by Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Etsu Nupe, and several other prominent northern traditional rulers.
