Barcelona Face Growing Crisis as Pedri Injury Deepens Squad Shortage

Barcelona’s midfield options have been dealt another major blow after the club confirmed that Pedri has suffered a hamstring tear, adding to an already crowded injury list that is testing manager Hansi Flick’s squad depth and title ambitions.

The 22-year-old midfielder sustained a tear in the distal biceps femoris of his left thigh, Barcelona said in a medical update on Wednesday. The club did not specify a return date, stating only that his recovery progress would determine his availability.

Pedri has been one of the most relied-upon players under Flick, having featured in 41 consecutive matches and missing just one of the coach’s 73 games in charge. His injury comes at a difficult moment — he was already ruled out of the upcoming league match against Elche due to suspension following his red card in the loss to Real Madrid.

Barcelona are now dealing with one of the heaviest injury tolls in La Liga. Pedri joins a list of key absentees including Gavi, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Dani Olmo, Joan Garcia and Marc-André ter Stegen. Several of those players are regular starters, leaving Flick with limited rotation options as the club continues to chase leaders Real Madrid, who hold a five-point advantage.

Since arriving from Las Palmas in 2020, Pedri has made 215 appearances for the club, but recurring hamstring problems have plagued his progress. He previously missed over three months during the 2021–22 season with a similar injury.

With a thinning squad and crucial fixtures ahead, Flick now faces a tactical challenge: maintaining Barcelona’s title push while managing fatigue and avoiding further injuries.
