The Nigerian Army on Friday held a solemn remembrance ceremony in Abuja in honour of the late former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, marking one year since his passing. The event, led by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, placed emphasis not only on Lagbaja’s legacy but also on strengthening morale within the Armed Forces and reinforcing national unity.

The ceremony, which began with a special Jumat prayer attended by senior military officers, soldiers, and dignitaries, highlighted Lagbaja’s contributions to Nigeria’s security framework. Lagbaja served as Army chief before his death on November 5, 2024.

Speaking after the prayers, Shaibu praised his predecessor for his dedication to national service, describing him as “a patriotic and selfless officer whose leadership strengthened the Army’s capability in defending the country.”

“This remembrance is not only about Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja,” Shaibu said. “It is about honouring all our fallen heroes — men and women who dedicated their lives to preserving the peace and unity of our nation.”

He urged personnel to remain steadfast in upholding the values exemplified by Lagbaja, stressing that the late officer’s legacy was defined by discipline, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to duty.

Shaibu also appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the military, especially as the country faces evolving security challenges.
“No military succeeds without the backing of its citizens,” he said. “We need prayers, cooperation and trust, as we work collectively to keep this nation safe.”

The memorial, attended by retired and serving top military figures including former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd.), underscores the Army’s tradition of honouring its own as a way of reinforcing institutional memory and motivating serving troops.

According to the Army, the remembrance activities will continue throughout the weekend, featuring an interdenominational church service on Sunday and community outreach programmes in honour of the fallen.

Lagbaja’s family and relatives of other deceased officers are expected to participate in the ceremonies.
