Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday departed Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit. His trip follows President Tinubu’s decision to remain in Nigeria to address pressing national security concerns.

According to a statement signed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, the President postponed his planned visit to the summit in order to receive additional security briefings on the recent violent incidents reported in Kebbi and Kwara States.

This year’s G20 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled for November 22–23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre. The gathering will host heads of state and representatives from the world’s major economies, as well as the European Union, African Union, and global financial institutions. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20, had formally invited President Tinubu to attend.

Shettima is expected to participate in high-level discussions on global economic stability, development financing, and Africa’s role in international cooperation. He is due to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of the summit.
