Barcelona Mark Emotional Camp Nou Homecoming With Resounding 4–0 Victory Over Athletic Bilbao

Barcelona celebrated their long-awaited return to the rebuilt Camp Nou on Saturday with a dominant 4–0 win over Athletic Bilbao, delivering a statement performance that lifted the defending champions level on points with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

The match marked Barça’s first appearance at their iconic stadium in two and a half years, following an extended reconstruction project that had been plagued by delays and forced the team to play home fixtures elsewhere. More than 45,000 supporters filled the partially reopened venue, creating a vibrant atmosphere enhanced by pre- and post-match fireworks.

A Dream Start in a New Era

The home crowd waited only four minutes to celebrate the first goal in the renovated arena. Robert Lewandowski, captaining the side, punished a defensive lapse after Eric García won possession high up the pitch. The Polish striker’s low drive slipped under goalkeeper Unai Simón, giving Barcelona an early edge and earning Lewandowski his eighth league goal of a stop-start, injury-affected season.

Supporters also paid tribute to club legend Lionel Messi, chanting his name in the 10th minute—a nod to his historic shirt number and enduring legacy—after the Argentine made an unscheduled visit to the stadium earlier this month.

Torres Shines as Barça Take Control

Barcelona extended their lead just before the break when teenager Lamine Yamal split open the Athletic defence with a clever outside-of-the-boot pass, freeing Ferran Torres to slot home Barça’s second. Simón again got a touch to the ball but could not prevent the goal.

Hansi Flick’s men put the result beyond doubt early in the second half. Eric García, filling in for suspended Frenkie de Jong in midfield, once again pressed high to regain possession and found Fermín López, who finished coolly for Barça’s third.

Athletic’s frustrations peaked moments later when Oihan Sancet was shown a straight red card after a VAR review for a reckless challenge on López. From there, Barcelona controlled proceedings comfortably.

Torres Completes the Rout

Torres capped off a standout performance with his second of the night, finishing calmly after another exquisite pass from Yamal. The brace brought his season tally to double digits and sealed an emphatic return to the club’s spiritual home.

Goalkeeper Joan García, making his first appearance in nine matches after injury, delivered a solid performance to help Barça secure their first clean sheet since September. He produced a sharp save to deny Dani Vivian late on.

Athletic Struggle to Threaten

Ernesto Valverde’s side, who entered the match in strong form, created intermittent pressure but rarely troubled the hosts. Chances for Unai Gómez and Nico Williams went begging, while defender Dani Vivian produced one of Athletic’s few on-target efforts.

Williams, who rejected a move to Barcelona last summer, received jeers from the crowd throughout the match.

Camp Nou Rebirth Gains Momentum

Despite high ticket prices, the match was nearly sold out. Barcelona expect to expand capacity further during the ongoing reconstruction, with the goal of reopening the fully modernised 105,000-seat stadium next season.

With momentum building both on and off the pitch, the champions now turn their attention to maintaining their title push as Real Madrid prepare for their clash with Elche on Sunday. Barça’s confident homecoming suggests that Camp Nou, even in its incomplete state, may once again become a fortress.
