Atiku Abubakar Officially Registers With ADC in Adamawa, Boosting Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), completing his registration as a party member in a high-profile event held in Adamawa on Monday. The move marks a significant development in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections.

The registration ceremony followed Atiku’s announcement over the weekend, during which he informed ADC supporters and key stakeholders of his intention to affiliate with the party. Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to the former vice president, confirmed the development in a statement obtained by PUNCH Online.

The event drew large crowds, with videos and photographs capturing Atiku’s convoy arriving to enthusiastic cheers. Supporters beat drums, sang songs, and carried placards bearing his image as he waved to well-wishers from his vehicle before formally receiving his ADC membership card.

Shortly after completing his registration, Atiku took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the milestone, posting simply: “It’s official. -AA.”

Atiku’s formal association with the ADC consolidates a political alliance he had earlier endorsed in July, positioning the party as a platform for opposition figures—including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—to mount a unified challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Until now, Atiku and other opposition leaders had refrained from formally registering with the ADC, making this step a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political realignment.

Political analysts suggest that Atiku’s membership is likely to strengthen the ADC’s profile nationwide, galvanize supporters, and potentially reshape opposition strategies as parties prepare for the next general election cycle.
