Troops of the 8th Division of the Nigerian Army have successfully eliminated a notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Kallamu, during an operation in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

A military source, who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday on condition of anonymity, described the development as a major breakthrough in ongoing security operations against armed banditry in the region. According to the source, Kallamu was a key lieutenant and close associate of the infamous bandit leader Bello Turji, and his elimination dealt a significant blow to the criminal network.

The operation, conducted in collaboration with local vigilante groups, targeted Kallamu and one of Turji’s primary logistics suppliers in the early hours of Monday around Kurawa village. The source confirmed that both suspects were neutralized during the offensive, which followed weeks of intelligence gathering and community collaboration.

Kallamu, a native of Garin-Idi in Sabon Birni LGA, had long been responsible for terrorizing communities in the area, causing widespread insecurity and hardship for residents. Reports indicate that he had recently returned to the area after evading a previous military operation in June 2025, during which he reportedly fled to Kogi State.

The source praised the role of local communities in providing actionable intelligence, which was instrumental in the success of the operation. Residents, as well as the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmad Aliyu on Security Matters, retired Colonel Ahmad Usman, have hailed the military’s action, describing it as a significant step toward restoring peace and stability in the affected communities.

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling banditry and criminal networks across the North-West, emphasizing continued collaboration with local stakeholders to protect lives and property.
