Disney, OpenAI Seal AI Video Creation Deal
In a sweeping shift for the entertainment and tech sectors, The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI on Thursday unveiled a three-year partnership that will allow fans to create personalized AI-generated videos starring more than 200 Disney-owned characters.
The deal — unprecedented in scope for a major Hollywood studio — grants OpenAI access to some of Disney’s most closely guarded intellectual property, including classic characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Marvel superheroes such as Iron Man and Captain America, and Star Wars legends like Darth Vader and Yoda. The content will be available through OpenAI’s Sora video generator and ChatGPT platforms.
The agreement marks a dramatic departure from the industry’s previous posture toward generative AI companies. For nearly two years, Hollywood firms, including Disney, have challenged tech companies in court, accusing them of scraping copyrighted materials to train AI models without permission. This deal signals a potential turning point, suggesting collaboration may be replacing litigation as studios explore new revenue channels in the digital age.
As part of the partnership, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and receive warrants giving it the option to purchase additional shares. The announcement gave Disney stock a modest boost, rising roughly two percent in Thursday trading.
Disney CEO Robert Iger hailed the partnership as a milestone moment for entertainment’s future, saying AI offered “a thoughtful and responsible way to extend the reach of our storytelling” while preserving the company’s creative values. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in turn, called Disney “the global gold standard for storytelling” and framed the deal as proof that creative industries and AI developers can cooperate responsibly.
Although fans will gain the ability to generate scenes featuring famous characters, the companies stressed that the agreement does not include rights to actors’ likenesses or voices — an issue that has been central to recent Hollywood labor negotiations. Both firms emphasized that protections and strict content controls will be enforced to prevent misuse, safeguard minors, and ensure respect for creators’ rights.
Beyond offering fans new tools, Disney plans to integrate OpenAI’s technology into its own ecosystem. The company will use OpenAI’s models to enhance Disney+ features, develop new digital products and interactive experiences, and provide ChatGPT access to employees across departments.
The deal arrives at a sensitive moment for OpenAI, which is grappling with questions about financial sustainability as the cost of operating its models climbs faster than revenue. With nearly a billion daily users worldwide, partnerships like Disney’s are being seen as crucial steps toward strengthening OpenAI’s long-term business strategy.
The collaboration is expected to roll out gradually, with character-based video generation becoming available to global users over the coming months.
