Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas Registers as APC Member, Signals Imminent Defection

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has formally registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant step towards his anticipated defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.

The governor completed his registration in his Hospital Ward in Wukari Local Government Area, where he received his APC membership card from the ward chairman in the presence of party officials and supporters. Kefas disclosed that a new date would soon be announced for his official public defection ceremony.

Speaking after the registration, the governor assured APC leaders and members of his commitment to transforming Taraba State through inclusive governance, stressing that his political move was aimed at delivering greater dividends of democracy to the people.

Governor Kefas had earlier fixed November 19 for his formal defection but postponed the event following the abduction of schoolchildren in Kebbi State. At the time, he explained that the transition was rooted in the collective interest of Taraba residents and revealed that preparations were underway to host dignitaries and party leaders for the event.

The governor’s move follows recent defections within the state legislature. Two days before his initially scheduled defection, the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Kizito, alongside 15 other lawmakers, left the PDP for the APC. The legislators cited persistent internal crises within the PDP at both state and national levels, as well as the need to align Taraba State politically with the federal government.

Kefas’ registration further underscores the growing wave of high-profile defections from the PDP in recent months, intensifying challenges within the opposition party. In November, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, defected to the APC after weeks of speculation, marking a notable political realignment in the South-South region.

His defection came on the heels of similar moves by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno; and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, all of whom joined the APC earlier in the year, signaling a broader shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
