Dangote Group Names Former CBN Director Mahmud Hassan as Group Chief Economist

Dangote Industries Limited has announced the appointment of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director, Dr Mahmud Hassan, as its new Group Chief Economist, a move aimed at reinforcing the conglomerate’s economic and policy advisory strength amid increasing global and domestic economic uncertainties.

The appointment, disclosed in a statement by the company, places Dr Hassan as the chief economic adviser to the Group, where he will provide strategic guidance on macroeconomic developments, market trends, and policy-related issues. He will report directly to the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote.

Dr Hassan brings over three decades of experience in economic policy, monetary management, and financial sector regulation to the role. His career at the CBN spans several high-level positions, including Director of the Trade and Exchange Department and Director of the Monetary Policy Department. He also served as Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee and worked closely with the CBN leadership as Special Assistant on Economic Policy and Research to the Governor.

At the regional level, Dr Hassan has been actively involved in advancing Africa’s economic integration efforts. He has worked with the African Union Commission as a lead consultant on trade integration programmes and contributed to initiatives surrounding the establishment of the African Monetary Fund.

An accomplished academic and researcher, Dr Hassan holds a doctorate in Economics and a master’s degree in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His professional training includes executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School, as well as certifications as a Bank Examiner and an Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Analyst.

Dr Hassan is a Fellow of several professional organisations, including the Nigerian Statistical Association, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Compliance Institute of Nigeria. He has authored numerous scholarly works in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary policy, energy economics, and financial engineering.

Alongside his new corporate responsibilities, he remains active in academia as a visiting professor at several Nigerian universities. He also currently serves as President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics.

According to the company, the appointment reflects Dangote Industries Limited’s commitment to leveraging deep economic expertise and policy intelligence to navigate complex market conditions across Nigeria, the African continent, and the global economy.
