FG Commissions ₦40bn CCTV Centre to Boost Safety on Third Mainland Bridge
The Federal Government has officially inaugurated a ₦40 billion closed-circuit television (CCTV) control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge, one of Lagos’ busiest road arteries. The project aims to enhance safety, enforce traffic regulations, and bolster security on the bridge.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Sunday, was led by Minister of Works, David Umahi, who highlighted that the initiative is part of ongoing rehabilitation works that began after the current administration assumed office in 2023.
“When we came on board in 2023, we met a very deteriorated Third Mainland Bridge,” Umahi said, noting that the bridge, alongside Carter and Iddo bridges, required comprehensive repairs both above and below water level. The minister emphasized that the rehabilitation, including the replacement of expansion joints, was personally approved by President Bola Tinubu.
The newly inaugurated CCTV system, which was initially announced in 2025, is designed to monitor traffic in real time, curb dangerous driving, prevent suicide attempts, and strengthen security. According to Umahi, security personnel stationed at the control centre will oversee live footage and enforce speed limits, while additional patrols using a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans will support rapid response operations.
“The idea is that we can see everything that is happening on the bridge,” Umahi said, warning motorists against excessive speeding and urging compliance with traffic rules.
Supporting him, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, described the facility as the first of its kind on any bridge in Nigeria. Dare explained that the system allows for real-time monitoring of both vehicular activity and surrounding waters, ensuring rapid intervention in emergencies.
The project incorporates advanced infrastructure, including:
-
240 solar panels and 10 inverters
-
A 300 kVA transformer and standby generator
-
Multiple monitoring screens with full air conditioning for the control centre
-
1,268 solar-powered street lights and a borehole facility
The total contract was awarded for ₦40.17 billion, with approximately ₦36 billion already disbursed to the contractor. Officials stated that the inauguration marks the first phase of the project, with additional commissioning scheduled once work on the bridge’s extension is completed.
The initiative is part of the federal government’s broader commitment to modernising Lagos’ transport infrastructure, improving road safety, and extending the lifespan of critical bridges in the nation’s commercial capital.
