Political Tensions Rise in Kano Over Alleged Defection of Governor Yusuf
Security was visibly tightened at the Kano State Government House on Monday amid swirling reports that Governor Abba Yusuf might be considering a defection from his current party. At the main entrance, combined personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were strategically positioned, while visitors were subjected to heightened security checks and strict identification procedures.
The surge in security presence comes as speculation grows over a reported rift between Governor Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is said to have opposed Yusuf’s alleged plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such a move could destabilize the NNPP and weaken the influence of the Kwankwasiyya political movement. Yusuf, however, has publicly denied any personal or political discord with Kwankwaso.
The tension has also spread within the NNPP itself, exposing divisions in what has long been a close political alliance. In a press statement, the NNPP in Kano State, supported by the national leadership, reiterated that the party does not endorse any defection to the APC. “We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC. I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening,” said Hashim Dungurawa, NNPP Kano State Chairman.
Political analysts note that any potential defection by Governor Yusuf could have significant implications. Kano State is one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, with one of the largest registered voter populations in the country. Historically, votes from Kano have played a decisive role in presidential elections and can shape the outcome at the national level. A shift in allegiance by the sitting governor, especially involving a figure like Kwankwaso with deep grassroots support, could reshape electoral dynamics in the coming election cycle.
Amid these developments, political watchers are closely monitoring events in Kano, as the state’s strategic importance makes it a focal point in national politics and any move by prominent figures there has the potential to ripple across the country.
