The traditional ruler of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89, bringing to an end nearly five decades of reign in one of Lagos State’s most historic communities.
The late monarch, who also served as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, was confirmed dead in a statement issued on Monday by the Lagos State Government.
Announcing the development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Oba Akran’s death as a monumental loss to the people of Badagry, Lagos State and the nation at large, noting that the monarch was widely respected for his leadership style, commitment to cultural heritage and relentless push for the development of the ancient coastal town.
According to the governor, Oba Akran, who spent close to 49 years on the throne, was renowned for his wisdom, selfless service and dedication to unity within the Badagry Kingdom.
In a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu said the late monarch was a stabilising influence who worked tirelessly to unite diverse interests within his domain while promoting Badagry’s rich history and traditions beyond Nigeria’s borders.
“On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos State, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the royal family and all associates of Oba Babatunde Akran, the paramount ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs,” the statement read.
The governor recalled that Oba Akran was a respected journalist before ascending the throne and that, as a first-class traditional ruler, he made enduring contributions to the growth and progress of Badagry, Lagos State and Nigeria.
He added that the monarch was instrumental in projecting Badagry’s historical monuments and cultural festivals to national and international audiences, thereby boosting tourism and cultural exchange in the area.
Sanwo-Olu urged the royal family, traditional institutions and the people of Badagry to work towards immortalising the late ruler, saying his legacy of unity, cultural preservation and development would continue to inspire future generations.
He also prayed for divine comfort for the family, the people of Badagry Kingdom and Lagos State over what he described as an irreparable loss.
