United States Delivers Military Supplies to Nigeria to Strengthen Security Operations
The United States has delivered a consignment of military supplies to Nigerian security agencies in a move aimed at reinforcing counterterrorism and security operations across the country.
The announcement was made on Tuesday via X by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which highlighted that the delivery is part of the ongoing partnership between the two nations. “U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” the post stated.
The shipment follows recent affirmations from the U.S. government of its readiness to deepen security cooperation with Nigeria. Support is expected to include enhanced intelligence sharing, provision of defence equipment, and other articles designed to assist Nigerian forces in tackling terrorists and violent extremist groups.
The development comes in the wake of a high-level Nigerian delegation visit to Washington in November 2025, aimed at strengthening bilateral security collaboration. The delegation, led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, held discussions with senior officials across the U.S. Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of War.
Key members of the delegation included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and two representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser.
During the visit, the Nigerian delegation addressed allegations of genocide in the country, stressing that violent attacks affect families and communities across all religious and ethnic lines. They emphasized that misrepresenting the security situation could deepen divisions and distort realities on the ground.
“The discussions provided ample opportunity to correct misconceptions about Nigeria, forged a constructive, solution-driven partnership with the United States, reinforced mutual trust, and advanced a coordinated approach to protecting vulnerable communities, especially in the Middle Belt,” said Bayo Onanuga, spokesman for the President.
Both nations agreed to implement a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a Joint Working Group to ensure coordinated actions across agreed areas of collaboration. Onanuga noted that Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening civilian protection measures, while the U.S. pledged complementary support, including humanitarian assistance for affected populations and technical support to improve early-warning systems.
The delivery of military supplies marks a tangible step in enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to respond to security threats while consolidating the growing strategic partnership with the United States.
