The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has issued a strong appeal to young people across Edo State to refrain from acts of violence, warning that such actions could plunge the country into further instability.

The monarch gave the admonition on Sunday while receiving leaders of the Benin City Christian Community at his palace in Benin City, where the group held the grand finale of its 2026 Universal Week of Prayers.

Speaking in the Edo language, the revered traditional ruler called on youths to exercise restraint and wisdom, stressing the importance of preserving the state’s cultural heritage and safeguarding the future of the next generation.

“To all our youths across Edo State, we plead with you not to use violence to destroy Nigeria or create confusion in this country,” the Oba said. “Allow the present government in Edo State to do its work. Continue to support and pray for the leaders of our land.”

His remarks come against the backdrop of recent reports of unrest involving students of Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, which have raised concerns about security in the state.

The monarch also offered prayers for Nigeria’s leaders, asking God and his royal ancestors to grant them strength and wisdom as they navigate the daily challenges of governance. Reflecting on his nearly 10 years on the throne, Oba Ewuare II urged Christians across denominations to remain united and support one another in line with the teachings of Christ.

The prayer programme, themed “The Unchangeable God,” featured goodwill messages, worship sessions and intercessory prayers. Apostle Godspower Ogbonmwan, who delivered a goodwill address, reminded participants that God’s promises are steadfast and encouraged leaders, regardless of their faith, to remain committed to the welfare of the people.

Intercessory prayers were led by the Chairman of the Benin City Christian Community, Apostle Matthew Ogbonmwan, alongside Reverend Olu Aderibigbe, while the General Secretary, Reverend Theophilus Aibinuomo, coordinated the event, which was marked by hymns, songs and moments of worship.
