Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly valued at £34.7 million.

The 25-year-old has penned a long-term contract with the north London club that is expected to keep him at Spurs until 2031, ending his brief spell in Spain after leaving Chelsea in 2024.

Gallagher opted for a return to the Premier League after attracting interest from several clubs, including Aston Villa, as he seeks more consistent first-team football to strengthen his chances of making England’s squad for the World Cup later this year.

Expressing his delight at the move, Gallagher said he was eager to begin a new chapter of his career at Tottenham, describing the club as a perfect fit and promising supporters that he is ready to contribute immediately.

The midfielder’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Spurs manager Thomas Frank, who has come under mounting pressure following a poor run of results. Tottenham have managed just five wins in their last 20 matches and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa last weekend, further intensifying scrutiny on the former Brentford boss.

Frank, who took charge only seven months ago after Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal, has faced increasing frustration from fans, with the team struggling for consistency in domestic competitions.

Gallagher is expected to bolster a depleted Tottenham midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur recently undergoing surgery for a hamstring injury, Lucas Bergvall sidelined, and Pape Sarr currently away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking on the signing, Frank praised Gallagher’s leadership qualities, experience across the Premier League and La Liga, and his work rate, pressing ability and goal threat, adding that the midfielder’s character would be a valuable asset in the dressing room.

Gallagher made 95 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 10 goals, before joining Atletico Madrid, where he featured 77 times but struggled to secure a permanent starting role under Diego Simeone.

His return to England marks a significant addition for Tottenham as they look to revive their season and stabilize their campaign.
