FG Commends Eagles for Resilience Despite AFCON Heartbreak

The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their spirited performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, assuring the team of the nation’s pride despite their heartbreaking semi-final exit.

Nigeria were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday after falling to hosts Morocco in a dramatic penalty shootout, which sent the Atlas Lions through to the final.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the national team demonstrated admirable discipline, unity and resilience throughout the competition, qualities he described as true reflections of the Nigerian spirit.

He noted that although the team did not reach the final, their determination and commitment on the pitch inspired millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.

Idris said the Super Eagles had once again reminded the country that wearing the national colours is about courage, teamwork and perseverance, urging the players to keep their heads high, learn from the experience and return stronger.

He added that Nigerians remain grateful for the excitement, hope and pride the team brought during the tournament.

Nigeria’s hopes ended after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved spot kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, paving the way for Youssef En-Nesyri to score the decisive penalty for Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The Moroccans will now face Senegal in Sunday’s final after the Lions of Teranga edged Egypt 1–0 in the other semi-final, courtesy of a goal from Sadio Mane.
