Nigeria paused on Thursday to honor its heroes as the nation observed Armed Forces Remembrance Day with a solemn parade and wreath-laying ceremony at the National Arcade in Abuja. The event paid tribute to soldiers who gave their lives defending the country, from the World Wars to the Nigerian Civil War and beyond.
Vice President Kashim Shettima led a distinguished gathering of government and military leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (Rtd), senior military officers, and foreign diplomats.
The ceremony began with a solemn march by soldiers, guiding the dignitaries to the cenotaph. There, heartfelt prayers were offered for both the fallen and the living who continue to serve with courage and dedication. Colonel Rev. B.P. Nyam, Director of Chaplain Services (Protestants), Group Captain H. Idris, Director of Air Force Islamic Affairs, and Navy Captain Very Rev. Fr. R.C. Diala, Director of Chaplain Services (Catholic), led the prayers, underscoring the unity and diversity of faith in Nigeria’s armed forces.
A minute of silence followed, honoring the sacrifices of the nation’s military heroes, accompanied by the thunderous firing of an artillery gun—a stark reminder of the price of peace.
The highlight of the ceremony was the wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Vice President Shettima laid the first wreath, joined by Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade. They were followed by Senate President Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Minister of Defence General Musa, and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Cameroonian High Commissioner Abbas Salaheeden. Top military officers, including the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chiefs of Army, Naval, and Air Staff, as well as the Inspector General of Police, also placed wreaths in solemn tribute.
The day serves as a moment to remember the valor, discipline, and sacrifices of Nigeria’s servicemen and women, highlighting the enduring spirit of patriotism and commitment to national unity. Armed Forces Remembrance Day, celebrated every January 15, reminds Nigerians of the courage and dedication of those who protect the nation, while inspiring future generations to honor and emulate their service.
