FCT Court Dismisses Defamation Suit Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Udughan
The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Udughan, who represents Kogi Central.
The case was struck out by Justice Chizoba Orji on Wednesday, following a formal application by the prosecution seeking to discontinue the suit. The Federal Government had initially brought the defamation case against the senator.
During the proceedings, the prosecution was represented by Aderonke Imana, who moved to withdraw the case. Following this, Senator Akpoti-Udughan’s counsel, West Idahosa, requested that the court formally strike out the matter. He also called for the return of all documents submitted by the senator and her sureties to the court.
The prosecution did not contest the defence’s request. In a brief ruling, Justice Orji granted the application, struck out the lawsuit, discharged the sureties, and directed that all related documents be returned to the senator and her guarantors.
Senator Akpoti-Udughan’s legal team welcomed the ruling, describing it as a vindication of the senator’s position.
