Manchester City have confirmed the signing of England international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, strengthening their defensive options with the addition of the highly rated centre-back on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

The Premier League champions moved quickly to secure Guehi’s services after being hit by a growing injury crisis in central defence. The transfer, reportedly valued at around £20 million, had been widely anticipated in recent days as City stepped up negotiations with Crystal Palace.

Reacting to the move, the 25-year-old defender expressed delight at joining the reigning champions, describing the transfer as a major milestone in his career.

“I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player,” Guehi said in a statement. “This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad. I want to continue growing as a player and as a person, and I believe this is the perfect environment to do that.”

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, praised Guehi’s consistency and leadership qualities, describing him as one of the standout defenders in English football.

“Marc has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League for quite some time,” Viana said. “He is still only 25, but he has already demonstrated leadership, professionalism and a strong desire to improve. We believe he will make us stronger.”

Guehi becomes City’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the recent acquisition of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in a deal believed to be worth around £65 million.

The defender enjoyed a successful spell at Crystal Palace, captaining the club to FA Cup victory in May — the first major trophy in Palace’s history — ironically achieved against Manchester City. He has also established himself as a regular in the England national team, earning 26 caps to date.

Several top clubs, including Liverpool and Bayern Munich, were reportedly monitoring Guehi’s situation and were expected to make a move at the end of the season when he would have been available on a free transfer. Palace manager Oliver Glasner had earlier indicated that negotiations were nearing completion.

City’s need for defensive reinforcements has been heightened by injuries, with John Stones, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol all sidelined during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently sit second in the Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal, as they continue their push for domestic and European honours.
