In response to the rapid pace of digitisation, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the enforcement of data privacy and protection in the telecommunications industry.
The MoU establishes a clear framework for both organisations to solidify their joint commitment to improving data protection and fostering regulatory harmony in Nigeria’s digital space.
NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Aminu Maida, emphasised that data protection and privacy rules are now key to the future of the communications industry. He highlighted that effectively regulating data in the sector is essential for maintaining trust, fostering innovation, and driving growth, especially as Nigeria moves further into the digital and AI era.
Maida said the NCC is dedicated to working with the NDPC to protect Nigerians’ privacy rights while keeping the communications network strong and ready for the future.

He pointed out the impressive growth of the sector, noting that Nigeria has progressed from roughly 500,000 connected telephone lines to over 170 million active connections today, showcasing the Commission’s mission to not only link Nigerians but also support businesses, foster innovation, and drive national development.
The EVC believes the next wave of growth will come from emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, which rely on data created by users of digital platforms. He emphasized that data is made by people, belongs to them, and that everyone should understand the data they produce and the rights tied to it. He cautioned that without such awareness, data could be monetized without the permission or benefit of its rightful owners.
