Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has clarified that his measured and non-confrontational stance amid the ongoing political tensions in the state is a conscious and strategic decision aimed at preserving peace and safeguarding broader national interests.
The governor made the remarks on Friday night in Lagos while receiving the Man of the Year 2025 award from New Telegraph. Speaking before a distinguished audience, Fubara said his posture in the face of political turbulence should not be mistaken for inability or surrender, but rather seen as a deliberate effort to maintain stability.
“I chose, for many reasons, to appear weak,” he stated. “Weak because I want peace. Weak because I need to protect not just what is important to me, but what is important to our dear nation.”
Fubara acknowledged that many of his supporters have faced challenges and pressures as a result of the political situation in Rivers State. He expressed appreciation for their loyalty and encouraged them to remain resolute despite the difficulties.
“Today is special for me and for everyone who believes in me. I know that for believing in me, you have experienced a share of special pain,” he said, urging continued faith and patience.
The governor described what some perceive as weakness as a virtue that would ultimately yield positive outcomes. He reiterated his belief that restraint, when properly applied, can produce long-term benefits.
“Continue to believe in what you believe in. Weakness is a virtue; it pays at the right time,” he added.
The award was presented by veteran journalist and former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba. He was joined by the Chairman of the Board of New Telegraph, Orji Uzor Kalu, and the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal.
Fubara mounted the stage accompanied by elders from Rivers State and former members of the State Executive Council, drawing loud applause from attendees at the ceremony.
In his acceptance speech, the governor dedicated the award to God, his family, and the people of Rivers State. He also acknowledged his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he credited for discovering and supporting him in his political journey.
The governor’s remarks come against the backdrop of heightened political developments in Rivers State, with observers closely watching how the unfolding situation will shape the state’s political landscape.
