President Tinubu Nominates Lamido Yuguda as CBN Deputy Governor
President Bola Tinubu has nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, a move that is now awaiting confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
According to an official statement from the Presidency, the appointment is in line with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007. The nomination follows the elevation of the previous deputy governor, Bala Bello, to the role of Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
President Tinubu urged the newly nominated deputy governor, alongside other appointees, to approach their roles with professionalism, dedication, and a commitment to sustaining Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.
Lamido Yuguda brings extensive experience in Nigeria’s financial and regulatory sectors. He served as the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2020 to 2024, overseeing regulatory frameworks and capital market operations.
A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Yuguda earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy in 1983. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Money, Banking, and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1991. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a CFA charterholder.
Yuguda began his career at the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. Between 1997 and 2001, he served as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund before returning to the CBN, where he ultimately became Director of the Reserve Management Department. He retired from the apex bank in 2016 after six years in that position.
With his extensive background in banking, finance, and capital markets, Yuguda’s nomination is expected to bolster the leadership of the CBN as it navigates Nigeria’s complex economic environment.
