Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal communicated his decision in a letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward of Tambuwal Local Government Area in Sokoto State. In the letter, the former governor stated that his resignation from the party takes immediate effect.

Explaining the move, Tambuwal said the decision came after careful reflection and extensive consultations with political allies, supporters, and stakeholders. According to him, persistent internal crises, leadership disputes, and widening divisions within the party had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the PDP.

The lawmaker, who currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Senate, said the continued conflicts within the party had weakened the unity and clear direction that once characterised the PDP.

Despite his departure, Tambuwal expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities it gave him over the years to serve Nigeria in different capacities across both the legislative and executive arms of government.

Following his resignation, he confirmed that he and his supporters have formally joined the African Democratic Congress, stating that the move was guided by his belief that Nigeria needs a stronger and more credible political platform anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and commitment to national development.

He also reaffirmed his dedication to the service of the country and pledged continued commitment to democratic ideals, justice, and national unity.

Tambuwal’s political career spans several decades and includes key leadership positions at both the national and state levels. He first rose to prominence as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State for three consecutive terms.

During his time in the lower chamber, he was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, a position he held between 2011 and 2015.

While serving as Speaker, Tambuwal defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October 2014, citing political considerations and the need to advance the interests of his state.

In 2015, he contested and won the Sokoto State governorship election on the APC platform, serving two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure, he later returned to the PDP in August 2018 after consultations with political stakeholders and supporters across the state.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Tambuwal declared his intention to run for president under the PDP and formally joined the party’s presidential race in January 2022. However, during the party’s primary election in May of that year, he stepped down from the contest and endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who eventually emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.

After completing his tenure as governor in 2023, Tambuwal returned to national politics and was elected to the Senate as the representative of Sokoto South Senatorial District on the PDP platform.

His latest defection to the African Democratic Congress marks another major shift in his political journey and adds to the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
