The All Progressives Congress is set to host its 2026 national convention in Abuja, with over 8,400 delegates expected to participate in the high-stakes gathering aimed at shaping the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The convention, scheduled for March 27 and 28 at Eagle Square, will bring together key figures within the ruling party, including Bola Tinubu, 31 state governors, and members of the Federal Executive Council.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mohammed Idris, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, confirmed that no fewer than 8,433 accredited delegates will take part in the proceedings. He made this known during a media briefing held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, where preparations and expectations for the convention were outlined.

Idris emphasised the importance of coordination and discipline among party stakeholders, urging members of the media and publicity team to work collaboratively to ensure a seamless and well-communicated event. He noted that the convention represents a critical phase in the party’s evolution, calling on members to uphold unity and reflect the leadership style of the president.

The minister further highlighted the need for the party to maintain strong internal democratic principles, describing the convention as a platform to reinforce its organisational structure and political direction.

In a significant development, the APC has confirmed it will adopt a consensus-based approach in selecting its national leadership during the convention. This strategy, party officials say, is intended to promote cohesion and avoid internal disputes.

Providing further insight into the process, Mary Ikoku, Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity, explained that while consensus would guide leadership selection at the national level, decisions regarding elective positions during party primaries remain undecided and could vary depending on local political dynamics.

The convention is expected to produce a new set of national executives who will steer the affairs of the party and oversee the organisation of primaries for key elective offices, including the presidency, governorships, and legislative seats.

Also present at the pre-convention meeting were prominent government officials such as Festus Keyamo, Hannatu Musawa, Bayo Onanuga, and Sunday Dare, alongside members of the party’s National Convention Central Coordination Committee.

With thousands of delegates and top political figures in attendance, the convention is widely seen as a defining moment for the APC as it positions itself for the next electoral cycle.
