President Bola Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special intervention fund for Nigeria’s Armed Forces, pledging to donate all his salaries since assuming office as initial funding for the initiative.

The announcement was made on Sunday as the president marked his 74th birthday, choosing the occasion to highlight the sacrifices of military personnel and their families amid ongoing security challenges across the country.

According to a statement released by the presidency, Tinubu has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a dedicated account that will cater to wounded soldiers as well as families of personnel who lost their lives in active service. The move, he said, is aimed at strengthening welfare support beyond existing insurance and compensation structures.

Describing members of the Armed Forces as “valiant men and women,” the president stressed that the fund would serve as a practical step toward recognising their contributions and addressing the long-term needs of those affected by conflict.

Tinubu’s decision to channel his personal earnings into the fund signals an attempt to lead by example, particularly as he called on other stakeholders to contribute. He urged state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative once operational details are made public.

The president framed the intervention not as charity, but as a national obligation, emphasizing that the country owes a duty of care to those who risk their lives to maintain peace and security, as well as to their families who bear the consequences of that service.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security threats, making the welfare of military personnel an increasingly important issue in public discourse. Analysts say the initiative could help boost morale within the Armed Forces if properly implemented and sustained with broad-based support.

Tinubu also used the occasion to explain his decision to mark his birthday quietly, citing the current national situation. In a personally signed message, he expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their goodwill, prayers, and continued support, noting that such encouragement remains vital to his administration’s efforts.

While largely symbolic, the president’s gesture is expected to generate political and public reactions, particularly regarding transparency, implementation, and whether other public office holders will follow through on his call to contribute to the fund.
