Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar Steps Down Amid 2027 Governorship Speculation
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has officially resigned from his position, marking a significant development within the federal cabinet as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. Tuggar’s exit aligns with a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu, requiring all political appointees seeking elective office in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31.
The directive was based on provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and guidelines released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which set the framework for party primaries and campaign activities ahead of the upcoming polls.
Tuggar’s resignation has fueled growing speculation that he may contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). While he has yet to formally declare his candidacy, political observers believe his departure from office signals an imminent entry into the race.
A seasoned diplomat and politician, Tuggar was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister in August 2023 by President Tinubu. Born on March 12, 1967, he has built a long-standing career spanning diplomacy, governance, and international relations.
Before joining the federal cabinet, Tuggar served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, representing the Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State. He later contested the Bauchi governorship election in two separate election cycles, further establishing his presence in the state’s political landscape.
Between 2017 and 2023, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, where he played a key role in strengthening diplomatic relations between both countries. His tenure was marked by efforts to boost trade ties and promote Nigeria’s interests across Europe.
As Foreign Affairs Minister, Tuggar oversaw Nigeria’s international engagements, contributing to the country’s diplomatic strategies under the current administration.
His resignation is expected to further reshape the political dynamics in Bauchi State, as the race for the 2027 governorship begins to gather momentum. Political analysts say more high-profile resignations could follow as other appointees comply with the presidential directive and prepare for elective contests.
