The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has adjourned its decision on the bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, fixing April 14, 2026, for ruling.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa announced the date on Wednesday after hearing final submissions from both the defence and prosecution on the bail request, ordering that the former governor remain in custody pending the court’s decision.

El-Rufai is currently being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is prosecuting him over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.

During proceedings, lead defence counsel Iyamu Oyewole argued that bail is a fundamental constitutional right and urged the court to grant his client release, noting that El-Rufai has strong roots in Nigeria and poses no flight risk.

However, the prosecution opposed the application, warning that releasing the former governor could jeopardize ongoing investigations. It argued that he might interfere with witnesses or obstruct the judicial process if granted bail.

Following arguments from both sides, Justice Aikawa reserved ruling on the matter, maintaining that the court would deliver its decision on the scheduled date.

The court premises witnessed heightened security presence during the hearing, amid expectations of significant public and political interest in the case. El-Rufai arrived at the court earlier in the day under tight security.

The former governor had filed his bail application a day earlier through his legal team, seeking release while trial proceedings continue. His case remains one of the most closely watched anti-corruption prosecutions in recent times, given his high-profile political career, including his tenure as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
