Atiku Abubakar Enlists U.S. Lobbying Firm to Bolster International Standing Ahead of 2027

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has taken a significant step toward defining his international image by hiring the Washington-based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. The deal, valued at $1.2 million for a 12-month period, is designed to strengthen his reputation in the United States and provide a “counterbalance” to the narratives currently being promoted by the Nigerian government.

Documents filed with the U.S. Department of Justice reveal that the agreement was finalized on March 9 and 10, 2026. Negotiated on Atiku’s behalf by politician Fabiyi Oladimeji, the contract tasks the firm with facilitating high-level meetings with U.S. officials and members of Congress. Beyond simple introductions, the firm will provide strategic advisory services on policy positioning and public relations, ensuring Atiku’s vision for Nigeria is clearly understood by American power brokers.

This strategic move comes at a time of significant domestic political maneuvering. Atiku Abubakar is widely viewed as a leading contender for the 2027 presidential election, but he faces a complex landscape at home. His current political vehicle, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is embroiled in internal turmoil. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently withdrew recognition from rival factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, a move that the lobbying firm suggests could threaten the opposition’s ability to compete fairly.

By engaging top-tier U.S. consultants, Atiku is signaling that his 2027 ambitions will involve a sophisticated global campaign. The firm has already begun its work, urging President Bola Tinubu to ensure the upcoming electoral process remains transparent and “beyond reproach.” For Atiku, the goal is clear: to ensure that when the next election cycle begins, his leadership posture is recognized both in Abuja and Washington.

Do you believe that hiring international lobbying firms is an effective way for Nigerian opposition leaders to secure a fairer playing field at home?
