The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced the suspension of its planned nationwide strike following fresh engagements with the Federal Government over lingering welfare and payment issues.

The decision was reached on Tuesday after an emergency meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, where members assessed recent commitments made by government officials and agreed to allow further dialogue.

According to NARD, the move to halt the industrial action was driven by noticeable progress in negotiations, particularly assurances regarding the settlement of outstanding salary arrears, hazard allowances, and reforms tied to the Medical Residency Training Fund.

The association noted that the government had demonstrated a “renewed willingness” to address the grievances that prompted the strike threat, signaling a possible breakthrough after weeks of tension.

Despite suspending the strike, NARD emphasized that the dispute has not been fully resolved, stressing that it will continue to monitor the government’s compliance with its promises.

The development offers temporary relief to Nigeria’s healthcare sector, which had been bracing for disruptions amid concerns over doctors’ welfare and working conditions in public hospitals.
