Nigerian Army Dismisses Sabotage Rumors Following the Tragic Death of Corporal Ude Jude

The 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina has officially moved to debunk viral reports surrounding the passing of one of its personnel, Cpl. Ude Jude. In a detailed statement released on Sunday by Cap. Abayomi Adisa, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the military categorized claims of internal sabotage and neglect as “deliberately crafted to misinform the public.”

Contrary to initial social media reports labeling the deceased as a Lieutenant, the Army clarified that Jude was a corporal enlisted in 2012 as part of the 67 Regular Recruit Intake. The incident did not occur within a barracks; rather, the soldier sustained injuries while deployed at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua. On the evening of February 16, Cpl. Ude Jude reportedly left his post to purchase personal items when he became involved in a physical altercation with a civilian over a personal dispute.

Following the encounter, the soldier was treated for stab wounds and trauma at the 17 Brigade Medical Centre and was subsequently relieved of his duties to focus on a full recovery. Despite weeks of consistent clinical monitoring, the situation took a tragic turn on March 24, 2026, when the soldier collapsed outside his residence. He was rushed back to the medical facility but was sadly confirmed dead on arrival.

The Army emphasized that they have remained in constant communication with the family, providing full institutional support. The Garrison Commander personally oversaw the funeral arrangements, and all military accoutrements were handed over to the next of kin in Enugu State. By providing this transparency, the 17 Brigade aims to protect the integrity of the service and honor the memory of the fallen soldier without the cloud of misinformation.

Should the military increase security presence even for off-duty soldiers in high-risk zones to prevent such civilian-linked altercations?
