Peter Obi May Leave ADC if Party Democracy Falters

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is grappling with uncertainty after a frank interview by former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

In an interview on Arise TV this Monday, the veteran politician emphasised that his loyalty is to principles over political structures, hinting he’s ready to leave the ADC if the party’s internal integrity breaks down.

Peter Obi utilised the platform to detail his history of party defections, framing each move as a necessity driven by his refusal to engage in “transactional” politics. He recounted his departure from APGA to the People’s Democratic Party, explaining that he chose to exit rather than allow a toxic relationship with his successor to derail the governance of Anambra State.

His critique of the PDP was equally sharp, as he described an environment where rules were ignored in favour of financial bargaining.

“I cannot be part of transactional primaries,” Peter Obi asserted, reinforcing his stance against the rigging of election processes at any level. This commitment to transparency eventually led him to the Labour Party, and subsequently to the ADC, where he now finds himself surrounded by familiar faces from various political backgrounds.

However, the former governor issued a stern warning to his current party leadership, emphasising that if the ADC begins to mirror the compromised processes of his former homes, he will not hesitate to seek a new platform. For Peter Obi, moving “20 times” is a small price to pay to maintain his political standards and avoid the “fire” of systemic corruption. As the ADC navigates this warning, the Nigerian political landscape remains on high alert for his next move.

Do you believe Peter Obi’s willingness to switch parties is a sign of political integrity or a lack of long-term strategy?
