PenCom Raises Alarm Over Rising Job Recruitment Scams in Nigeria

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has issued a public warning to Nigerians over the growing wave of fraudulent job recruitment schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals across the country.

In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the Commission revealed that scammers are increasingly exploiting digital platforms such as WhatsApp, emails, and direct phone calls to lure victims with fake employment offers.

According to PenCom, the fraudsters often pressure targets to quickly provide personal and sensitive information under the guise of securing job placements. The agency noted that a common tactic involves creating urgency—such as imposing a 48-hour deadline—to manipulate victims into acting without proper verification.

The Commission further disclosed that in several reported cases, scammers request applicants to submit confidential documents to an unidentified “secretary” through WhatsApp, a move it described as a clear warning sign of fraudulent activity.

In a more alarming development, PenCom stated that some of the perpetrators have gone as far as impersonating the Director-General of the Commission to gain credibility and deceive potential victims.

Advising the public, PenCom urged Nigerians to ignore and delete suspicious messages or emails, stressing the importance of not sharing such communications or engaging with unknown contacts requesting personal details.

The warning comes amid intensified efforts by regulators to curb financial fraud in the country. Recently, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shut down more than 400 illegal investment schemes as part of a broader crackdown on fraudulent operations.

PenCom reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s pension system while continuing to monitor and respond to emerging scam threats.
